Located between a hillside and the city’s urban center, the new Recreation and Wellness Center will anchor student life activity in a high-performance building dedicated to fostering well-being.
The new center will promote a holistic approach to wellness by integrating recreation, fitness, mental health, and academic spaces under one roof. The design leverages the site’s unique topography, connecting the upper and lower portions of campus with a pedestrian through way. Streamlined circulation and the transparent façade will increase campus connectivity by blurring the boundaries between the inside and outside of the building.
High Performance Design
The project seeks to showcase the university’s commitment to sustainability, working towards a low-energy outcome, leveraging a green roof and PV installation. The project restores hillside ecology with it’s innovative circulation strategy up the hillside, while also leveraging the topography and campus infrastructure to manage 100% of the stormwater through infiltration and reuse. Universal design strategies were introduced to provide an ADA compliant pathway within a complex topography. In addition to related efforts, the project seeks to achieve LEED Platinum Certification.
