The first true “hub” of student life for a commuter campus, enhancing student connectivity.

The new two-story building reimagines a disconnected site and reignites it as a place for social connection. Daytime finds the building filled with natural light, while the façade serves as a virtual window into and from the newly defined quad, providing a glimpse into the social heart and soul of an active campus.

Student-led design

Designed in response to the continued growth and consolidation of student services into a single location, the building program was planned collaboration with the college’s various user groups, including students, faculty, users and administrators, helping to define the heart of campus life. Students articulated the need for clarity of spaces and sought opportunities for interaction and collaboration as the key driver of building and site organization.

The central atrium links all entries and is the social hub of campus, and offers itself to the visitor as a panorama of both internal multi-uses and of the entire campus, an indoor extension of the quadrangle and a one stop location to understand how the entire campus falls into place.

The building’s central grand staircase clearly connects student service spaces, bookstore, dining, lounges and library learning center. The natural light and transparency played an inspirational role in the design process.

Home away from home

The interior is conceptualized as the family room of the campus, providing a between-class home to the commuting student body.

Amenities include student service spaces, a bookstore, dining lounges and a library learning center, offering numerous opportunities for social and academic interaction and a one-stop model of student service support.

Fitting the campus context like a glove, the careful composition of site and architecture components brings a missing closure and balance to the existing incomplete quadrangle.
