Guiding principles, shaped jointly by university leadership and the design team, align the project with the campus master plan and center it on belonging, holistic wellness, sustainability, and community connection.
Early in the design process, Michigan State University students made a simple request for their new recreation center: more natural light. The 293,000-square-foot Student Recreation and Wellness Center answers, with a daylit courtyard at its heart, where students can explore new activities and connect with one another.
Recreation, health and wellness are closely connected throughout the building. Spaces for personal and social well-being receive the same consideration as those for physical activity. The central courtyard reflects this balance by combining recreation programs and informal gathering areas in one open setting. Smaller, quieter spaces elsewhere in the building offer room for rest and reflection.
The Student Recreation and Wellness Center establishes a new model for student well-being at Michigan State University, one where a workout, a quiet hour beneath the trees, and a chance meeting in the courtyard all count toward the same goal. Gathering these experiences in a single destination, the center gives every Spartan a place to belong and to build health that lasts a lifetime.
