Sports and Learning Complex
Where once was a blighted brownfield site is now home to a new track and field complex in the Heritage West neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky.
YEAR OF COMPLETION
285,890 sq. ft.
The master plan focuses on creating a world-class indoor and outdoor track and field multipurpose event facility. The Norton Sports Health and Learning Complex was designed to host various sporting events, potentially sponsored by USA Track and Field (USATF), the National College Athletics Association (NCAA), and regional schools. The facility also features retail space and related amenities focusing on investment in the neighborhood.
A “community green” anchors the site towards the neighborhood. The outdoor 400 meters, eight-lane track is located along with the “commons” pedestrian way that bisects the vast site. The outdoor track accommodates multi-sports within the infield and provides seating for up to 500 and parking for 750 cars. The site concedes for a future multipurpose/banquet facility building expansion for tennis courts, basketball courts, dedicated warm-up lanes, and a hospitality lounge.
The indoor complex, designed as a 200 meter, six-lane hydraulically-banked track with eight lanes for sprints and hurdles, in addition to space for pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, and weight throwing events. The fieldhouse, designed for seating up to 4,000, can host volleyball tournaments for as many as nine matches. Support spaces such as concessions, event facility offices for media and press, sports training and treatment rooms, and locker rooms were part of the design.
