Design Features

As the first LEED Platinum healthcare facility in Ohio, the building design serves patients and the environment – by optimizing indoor air quality and reducing the environmental footprint of the center. In a neighborhood disproportionately affected by poor air quality, reducing UH Rainbow Center’s energy consumption doesn’t just impact building performance, it also reduces atmospheric pollution and the associated health implications for residents.

The façade’s geometric angles are designed with dual functionality— providing shade for patient comfort and the building’s energy performance. Waiting areas are organized around the perimeter of the building, providing natural light and views to street-level activation, reinforcing connection to the community. To assist with wayfinding, hallways retain a distinct color and graphic theme, designed to represent people of all ages and ethnicities — highlighting community and inclusivity. Biophilic principles were applied to patient spaces as well as staff areas, including views to the outdoors from workstations and a rooftop garden for respite.
