Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium
Project Description
Moody Nolan designed this 10,000 seat, nationally recognized premier track and soccer stadium on The Ohio State University’s main campus. A nine lane, 48″ wide track with continuous 130′ radius ends, were placed around a 225’×360′ soccer field to accommodate varsity requirements. An engineered hybrid turf field installed consisted of a synthetic stabilizing mat with natural turf for durability. Tribute towers flanking the grandstand memorialize Jesse Owens by borrowing imagery from the Berlin Olympic Stadium where he achieved fame. The elegant roadway facade exposes the steel grandstand structure and incorporates brick arches and piers to stylistically respond to the nearby campus. Underground conduits connect the track and field to the press box, with an arched roof as a focal point. Concessions, offices, officials’ locker rooms and two team meeting rooms are located below the stands. A landscaped path provides connection to an adjacent facility housing team lockers and showers.
