McCormick Place Event Center Breaks Ground

Moody Nolan joined the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, DePaul University, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other design partners on Monday for the groundbreaking of the future McCormick Place Event Center in Chicago.

Located in the city’s South Loop community, the project will add a 10,000-seat venue to McCormick Place, the country’s largest convention center. The Event Center will also serve as the new home for DePaul University basketball.

“Today is a significant day for the City of Chicago, DePaul University, and for Moody Nolan,” said Renauld Mitchell, Moody Nolan’s project Principal-In-Charge. “Once completed, this building will assume its place in Chicago’s world-class architectural tapestry, serve as a catalyst for further development along the Cermak corridor, revive DePaul University basketball’s rich tradition, and continue to elevate Moody Nolan’s stature in Chicago’s architectural fraternity.”

The architectural design is contemporary yet complementary to the adjacent historic Prairie District. Located on the site’s most public spot, the corner of Cermak Road and Indiana Avenue, Troy Sherrard – Moody Nolan’s project Design Principal explains, “The building’s placement and its transparent facades create an experience in which the energy & excitement within the venue will be felt on the street by the people of Chicago.”

The 285,000-square-foot Event Center is scheduled for completion in 2017.
